Dubai’s public transport network is set for its biggest expansion yet, with the announcement of a brand-new Metro Gold Line.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, revealed plans for the project, which will increase the overall Dubai Metro network by around 25 per cent.

The new line will stretch approximately 42 kilometres and include 18 stations, alongside an extensive tunnel system that will significantly expand the city’s existing underground infrastructure.

Once complete, it will be the largest transport project undertaken in Dubai to date.

Scheduled for completion on September 9, 2032 — marking the 23rd anniversary of the Dubai Metro — the Gold Line will connect 15 key areas across the city, serving an estimated 1.5 million residents and improving access to more than 50 major developments currently under construction.

One of its defining features will be Dubai’s first fully integrated underground route, designed to improve efficiency and ease congestion across some of the city’s busiest corridors.

The line is set to begin in the historic Al Ghubaiba area and run through central districts including Business Bay and Al Wasl, before extending out towards communities such as Dubai Hills, Motor City and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Interchange stations are planned at key points including Al Ghubaiba, Business Bay, Jumeirah Golf Estates and a future connection to the Etihad Rail network, strengthening links between urban and inter-emirate transport.

The route will also improve access to major attractions such as Global Village and Dubai Miracle Garden, as well as residential areas including JVC, Arabian Ranches and Nad Al Sheba.

Daily ridership is projected to reach around 465,000 passengers by 2040, with the project expected to deliver significant long-term economic returns over the next two decades.
